Police Cadets

What is a Police Cadet?

The Rapid City Police Cadet program is designed for young men and women between the ages of 15 and 21, with the goal of fostering leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and community engagement among youth across the United States. Participants benefit from mentorship provided by experienced police officers, as well as access to program resources and meeting facilities. The curriculum includes a wide range of activities that promote social development, civic responsibility, outdoor engagement, career exploration, and physical fitness.

Career interest surveys conducted in high schools nationwide reveal a strong and growing interest among students in the fields of law enforcement and criminal justice. However, public perception of these careers is often shaped—and at times distorted—by media portrayals. Many young individuals are seeking real-world exposure, practical knowledge, and actionable insights into these professions.

In response, the Rapid City Police Department offers this cadet program to connect motivated youth with dedicated law enforcement professionals who are committed to sharing their experience and expertise. The program aims to provide participants with a realistic understanding of the profession while helping them build essential life and career skills.

What do Cadets Do?

The Rapid City Police Cadet Program offers a wide range of activities focused on service, leadership, citizenship, outdoor engagement, career development, and physical fitness. Among these, the Ride-Along Program stands out as one of the most sought-after experiences.

To be eligible for participation in the Ride-Along Program, cadets must be at least 15 years of age and must successfully complete the required training provided by the Rapid City Police Department. During ride-alongs, cadets gain firsthand exposure to law enforcement operations by observing and assisting officers in the field.

Cadets may be involved in activities such as operating the police radio, directing traffic, and documenting incident-related information. This hands-on experience offers valuable insight into police procedures and day-to-day responsibilities, helping to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application in the field of law enforcement.

Cadet Benefits

The Cadet Program is, first and foremost, a mentorship initiative designed to support the personal growth and development of young individuals. While it offers valuable hands-on learning experiences in the field of law enforcement, its primary focus is on fostering essential life skills and supporting both personal and professional development—whether in a law enforcement career or any other chosen path.

In addition to career readiness, the program emphasizes the importance of civic responsibility and active community involvement, helping participants become engaged, informed, and service-minded citizens.
