These are a safety improvement demonstrated to improve red light compliance and reduce crashes elsewhere in the United States and a previous project has installed them on all SDDOT-owned signals inside the city limits. The agreement stipulates that the City will maintain the retroreflective back plates on its traffic signals for five years after installation.
