Agenda Item Summary:
RCFD is seeking funding for 21 new positions to reopen Station 7’s prior location (now called Station 2) in North Rapid City. Grant funding would cover 21 new positions (wages and benefits) for three years.

Why important for the city: Restaffing Station 2 is the first step in meeting the ever-growing needs of the community. Both Station 1 and Station 2 will be able to serve a smaller area of town, resulting in shorter travel distances and faster response times. In the instance of a large, community-wide event, the RCFD’s resources city-wide will also be more prepared to respond. Since 2020, the RCFD has seen a 32% increase in call volume, equating to each firefighter running an average of 125 calls a year and each station running an average of 3,071 calls each year. Hiring the 21 FTEs required to man this restored station will bolster the RCFD’s ability to meet NFPA 1710 standards and have sufficient staffing available to respond to a second incident as well.

Strings: Grant funds can only be used for wages & benefits. Grant funds will cover 3 years.
