Roofing permits soar

RAPID CITY, SD--The City's Building Services Division issued 595 building permits last month, the second-highest total for issuance of permits in the month of June since 2000.  The total is considerably higher than the 343 permits issued in June 2019.  The permit valuation last month totaled $15,588,972, compared to the $11,228,359 total in permit valuation issued for the same month last year.

Despite the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, City officials point to the recent numbers as examples of solid building activity in the community.

For the first half of 2020, the City issued 1,846 building permits with a total valuation of $93,577,390.  The numbers compare to 1,442 permits issued for the first six months of 2019 with a valuation total of $96,221,122.

A total of 344 residential roofing permits were issued in June, compared to 112 issued in June 2019.  The total value of last month's roofing permits was more than $3 million.

The top permit issued for June by the City was issued to Black Hills Power, Inc. for Black Hills Energy site development at 409 Deadwood Avenue ($2.5 million).
